16" x 16" acrylic on linen, January 2011
Artists Statement. With only a little bit of cheese.
This piece focuses on the strength of the human heart and the role it plays during hardship. The elk represents stamina, freedom, and power, which reflects both the physical action of the human heart as it circulates blood and the passion its spiritual aspect can produce to drive us through difficult situations. Elderflowers decorate the elk's antlers to represent true love, a reminder that life without love is dead. The frame behind the animal depicts the circulatory structure of a human's left lung, which lies near our hearts and represents the connectedness both beneath our own skin, and in the lives that surround us.
